Certificate Course: Working Therapeutially With Autistic Adults. 6 Days live, 2 hrs videos, plus supervision clinical discussion group sessions
SATURDAYS - starting March 2025: The ‘Certificate in Working Therapeutically With Autistic Adults’. It is a neuroaffirming course live online (in Zoom). 6 live training days, supervisory clinical discussion group sessions and 2 hours of EXTRA training videos to watch at home. Run by two autistic psychotherapists and educators, Vauna Beauvais and Eoin Stephens. This course is trans-modality. It’s not a ‘model’ of therapy, as such. But the training is focused on being neuroaffirming, culturally attuned, trauma-informed, and social-justice minded, - focussing on the mental health and wellbeing of autistic clients in therapy. We welcome counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists with all backgrounds and training perspectives as there isn't only one modality that 'works' for autistic clients. This course is to help you to make sense of how you already conceptualise therapy and as an extra layer of awareness to applying in your work as a therapist with autistic adult clients.

'Being Autistic' as an Identity
Explore how counsellors and therapists can implement practical guidance on identity-affirming practices like using identity-first language, connecting clients to autistic communities, and tailoring therapeutic approaches to validate autistic experiences. Tune in to experts Vauna Beauvais and Eoin Stephens, autistic psychotherapists themselves, to gain perspective on the systemic barriers autistic individuals face and how professionals can empower those they support through valuing neurodiversity and self-determination. Understand some aspects that can hinder identity formation, such as the stigma and lack of acceptance, as well as conflicts autistic people face in embracing their identity.
Anxiety and Autistic Adults
In this week's episode of the Neurodiversity Therapy podcast, co-hosts and autistic therapists Eoin Stephens and Vauna Beauvais have an in-depth discussion about anxiety in autistic adults. They provide insights and advice for fellow clinicians seeking to better understand and support autistic clients struggling with anxiety. Eoin and Vauna draw on both their professional expertise as therapists and their lived experiences as autistic individuals to explore this important yet complex mental health issue.
Identifying Autism in Minority Groups and Females
30 minutes free online event: When seeking to identify (or self-identify) a person as being autistic, piecing it together requires an inclusive, identity-affirming lens to reduce disparities for marginalised populations including females and gender vairant people. The stereotype of autism as a "white male" phenomenon causes people to be overlooked or missed. Factors like cultural norms, gender expectations, and intersecting identities can mask autism characteristics or cause them to manifest differently. The consequences are that lack of access to identification and support prolongs struggles and reduces lifetime outcomes.
WE ASK: How does intersectionality between gender identity and autism affect diagnosis? and How can diagnosis processes be made more identity-affirming?
Understanding Executive Function Differences in Autistic Adults
Autistic and other neurodivergent adults often experience significant challenges with executive functioning - the mental processes that allow us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, multitask, and more. Difficulties with cognitive flexibility, working memory, organization, time management, and impulse control can profoundly impact quality of life.
What are these executive function challenges actually like to live with day-to-day? Vauna Beauvais and Eoin Stephens talk and describe to enable counsellors and psychotherapists to better appreciate the real struggles in their autistic clients’ lives and narratives.
Self-regulation, Energy Management, and Stimming in Autistic Adult Clients
For counsellors and psychotherapists, this 30-minute CPD session hosted by autistic therapists Vauna Beauvais and Eoin Stephens will provide immediately applicable insights about key topics when working with autistic adults.
The discussion will cover the roles of stimming as an important self-regulation tool, managing energy levels related to burnout, and collaborating with clients on sensory needs. There will be a focus on avoiding stigma around stimming behaviors in the therapeutic space. Whether you're an experienced professional or a student, you'll gain invaluable perspective and skills for making mental healthcare more accessible and neuroaffirming.
